There is some debate as to the educational merits of standardized testing. Some of this is presented in the Januszewski & Molenda text. Specifically, the authors (and others) contend that most standardized tests do not address deep learning. Briefly escribe a lesson that would include some technology as well as learning goals that would require deep learning. Describe how you know this addresses deep learning. Discuss what the appropriate learning outcomes for these goals should be. Finally, describe how your lesson uses concepts of either cognitive information processing or constructivist learning.
Enduring Question: How does conflict affect one’s identity?
Essential questions: What steps do we take to read a poem?
What is the importance of paraphrasing each stanza?
What is the theme of “The World is not a Pleasant Place to Be”?
RATIONALE: This poem will link to the theme presented in “The World is Not a Pleasant Place to Be”
LESSON CONTENT:
Goal: Read “The World is Not a Pleasant Place to Be”
INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES
Do Now: Take out “How to read a Poem” notes and open poem on computer in Google Docs.
Procedures: 1. Students will complete Google Docs form: Step 1 (predicting based on title). Then students will use individual headsets to listen to the podcast recodring of the poem (listen to poem for understanding) 3. Students will complete Step 3 (read the poem and fill out Google From: paraphrase each stanza) in groups. 4. We will review each stanzas meaning as a class. 5. Students will be required to work on the beginning steps of analysis by themselves (Google Form) . Students will use audacity to record their discussion on the anlysis of the poem.
Teacher will use this recording to provide authentic assessment.
This lesson involves deeper thinking because the students must analyze. The students usually struggle with this analyzing aspect of reading a poem. It is important for them to understand what the poem means before they can analyze the poem. This process of learning above again displays the CIP. The students will call on previous knowledge of how to read a poem and then will work in steps that provide effective learning to fully understand the concept of how to read a poem.
